First Windows Live Wave 4 update is for Hotmail (Updated)

Windows Live Hotmail Wave 4 is on its way, and Microsoft has given a list of …

Wave 4 is the next update to both Windows Live's Web services (like Hotmail) and client applications (like Messenger). The new version is supposed to focus more on the applications than the services (unlike Wave 3). The first taste of Wave 4 that we're getting is for Windows Live Hotmail (unless of course you count the Office Web Apps Technical Preview that made its appearance on Windows Live for select testers yesterday).
Microsoft says that everyone should see the new features by the end of the month. The Hotmail team has confirmed the following updates coming to the service: more keyboard shortcuts, a new buddy list for when you sign into your Web Messenger from within your Hotmail inbox, improvements to help you pick contacts for your messages, auto-save for your e-mail drafts, and the ability to download all files in a message as a zip file (versus one by one). The full changelog is as follows:
  • Auto Refresh of Inbox: If a user is logged into WebIM, their inbox will automatically refresh. Currently this is set to occur every minute; for now users will not be able to change the refresh interval or turn off this option.
  • Auto save Drafts: E-mails are now automatically saved to the drafts folder while a user is composing them. This is currently set to occur every three minutes; for now users will not be able to change the save interval or turn off this option.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts: Lots of keyboard shortcuts have been added (full list), including shortcuts to match both Yahoo and Gmail. A new page in Options allows you to choose what type of shortcuts you'd like to use.
  • Contact Picker Improvements: Users can now edit contacts in compose, recently e-mailed data used in auto-complete and contact picker, copy/paste enabled for IE, verify recipients enabled. When the user types in an e-mail address, upon completion of the e-mail address, Hotmail verifies if it is valid. If the recipient is bad, it is flagged "Red" and the user can edit the entry. When the user hovers over the e-mail address, a tooltip will explain that the e-mail address is bad.
  • Download all attachments: If there are multiple attachments on an e-mail, they can now be downloaded together as one zip file.
  • WebIM Contact List: Buddy list of online friends are now available from the WebIM dropdown menu.
  • Mobile browser improvements: A number of backend changes to improve performance on mobile devices/browsers.
  • Action Bar at bottom of page: Reply/Forward/Delete buttons are now available from both the top and bottom of an e-mail.
In February 2009 we reported that the final Wave 3 updates for Hotmail and Messenger were trickling out, and afterwards Wave 4 would be on its way. According to a page on windowslivehelp.com, this update is being referred to as Wave 4 M1. The last part stands for milestone one so hopefully there's more coming to Hotmail sign  in the coming months; while these updates are welcome, who wouldn't want more improvements?
